but instead i'm working on my most recent original fic idea.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy, as I've mentioned before, was one of the most inspiring books I've ever read, and my second favorite book of all time. And I've finally begun formulating a vague idea I've had from The Road, and I've been trying to emulate McCarthy's style in a way, because I love how he writes. The plot is more inspired by the work of the artist Falling You (check them out on Magnatune.com--they're AWESOME). Anyway, here's kind of the opening.

snow was falling fast

once there was a world full of sunlight and shadow, light and dark. the sky was blue and there was a sun, bright and shining. there were fish in the sea and deer in the forest, running away from you, white tails flashing through the trees as they leapt, graceful and smooth. there were birds winging through the sky, circling and then dropping down into the trees to settle in their nests. a spring ran through the mountains, sweet and clear and fresh, pounding rocks into tiny pebbles as it went, cold from the snow.

once, that is.

they call it the Grey World, those who live in the cities now. there is fresh water in the cities, still, water from underground reservoirs that are still clean and sweet. in the cities there is sometimes sunshine, sometimes. the cities run on wind power because it is always windy and they save all their water through complex filtering systems so it goes back underground where it is used all over again. but they do not leave, because the cities are safe little bubbles, havens. there are four cities, maybe five, no one is quite sure because they do not leave. and where there is not city there is Grey World, like hell or a giant ocean that surrounds them.

there is nothing in the Grey World. nothing but cold and wind and ash and bones.

Any thoughts?

You haven't even introduced any characters and I'm already fascinated. The writing style is very interesting.

thanks for being fascinated. XP

I usually don't use really bizarre writing styles, except in lyric essays or personal pieces. But McCarthy's style is just wonderful, and I wanted to keep some aspects of my own style while kind of emulating his a little.

These sections are very different from the main part of the story, though.
