Just saw Pan's Labyrinth with GodBrother.
Very good. Dark fairy tale--rated R for language and pretty graphic violence--enough to make me wince, but not as bad as the Passion of the Christ. In Spanish, subtitled, and I really liked that--I heard an interview on NPR saying the director debated whether to put it in Spanish or English, and decided on Spanish because of the authenticity (it takes place in Spain) and the musicality of the language. I thought it was an excellent choice. Great music, great plotline, and an interesting philosophical question:
So...was it all in her head, or did she have to sacrifice her mortal body to achieve princess status?
Hmm...I could think about this all day, and GB and I mused all the way out of the theatre and on the way to his house.
Also, Vidal's...acceptance was incredibly touching. He really loved his son, I think. I did feel kinda bad for him (I have this horrible habit of feeling bad for the villains, even if they're complete bastards like Vidal) that his son wouldn't know what time he died like he knew his father's. The symbolism of the pocket watch was really cool.
But I looooved Ofelia. I loved her character, and her name. I also liked Mercedes a lot--she was very strong and very vulnerable all at once. But I think the faun--Pan--was my favorite character of all. That or the faeries. I loved them. And Ofelia. I like to think that it was real, even if it was in her own mind.
Great movie--I highly recommend it.
Have a super-fun idea for a fic, inspired by one of our group mimes today. Expect some soon.
Oh boy! And Trinity Blood just got interesting!
nebulia out.
