nebulia: a nebula (the scared guy)
Got my back adjusted at Le Chiropractor yesterday. It feels amazing, though I'm a little sore.

Dryland yesterday, too. Upped most of my weights and I can notice. Except for benching, which I'm used to now. Creepy that last week at this time I was in pain from it.

Right now, what really hurts are my shoulders--my deltoids, if you want to be technical. They're sore...and tense, but mostly sore, and I can feel it. And it's nasty.

In other news...Toby peed on the floor last night, and Maman took him out, and then Dad came out so Maman could go inside and fold clothes. And she cried.

I think a lot of it was tears of frustration, but Maman crying is like...unheard of. She cries over Granny, and sometimes Gracie, and at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, but not just randomly, and the fact that that was what she was doing--crying randomly, though Dad was admittedly being a bastard tonight--was really terrifying. So, if anyone's reading this, have a prayer/good thought/happy vibes for my mother, please.

What is it about OOC fics?

I mean...okay. Let's go back to my hometown fandom, Les Mis. there, OOC was a no-no. Characters had to be at least 75% IC, if not more, for the average fic. There were exceptions--Crack! and whatnot--but still.

Then I move to anime...particularly RK. And suddenly it's even mentioned in the summary--"AU, OOC," et al. This bothers me.

Yes, usually most OOC authors manage to keep some of the character in them: Kenshin is usually all right, even if he is labeled as OOC. While I think canon!Battousai is not the sex god that a lot of authors make him out to be, Kenshin is, however, a, like, ten-dimensional character, so I can see how it might work.

Kaoru is a lot harder. I can't picture Kaoru as a sex goddess at all. While I think she's 3-D, she has a lot less dimension than Kenshin. But there are still authors who write her as this sex kitten who fucks around and enjoys it (can't imagine Kaoru or Kenshin fucking around much as it is. Sano, yes, Megumi, maybe, on a good day, but not K&K). This bothers me.

OOC ruins the characters. Talented authors can pull it off, and stick a character in a totally different situation, even give them different moral values, even state "OOC" in the summary, and manage to keep the original essence of the character alive. I'm certainly not that good. But there aren't that many talented authors out there. And so a lot of them ruin the characters entirely.

I agree that sexgod!Kenshin makes for some very hot smut. And I appreciate hot smut a lot. But tone it down, please? Sexgod!Kenshin can be pulled off if you're good, because Kenshin might be able to do that (read: the scene in volume 5 where he licks the blood off of his cut wrist and flashes a "I'm gonna fuck you after this one, Kaoru!" look). But Kenshin also drags around multiple guilt-angst-former-murderer complexes, and, deep down, seems like a very shy person (go read vol. 19, 20, and 21. Omigosh, so shy!), which makes it pretty hard for him to be any sort of sexgod, at least canonwise. So sexgod!Kenshin, while seriously hawt, is, in the eternal words of Jack Sparrow, "Improbable, not impossible."

Sexgoddess!Kaoru, however, leans towards the impossible for me. Simply because she is such a moral person, and because she is so emotionally shy. Canonwise, also, she's been very focused on her swordwork and is only seventeen, which doesn't give her too much time to sleep around.

So OOC is mildly irritating, but more confusing. I was raised in a fandom that OOC is a sin, so I guess I just don't quite understand.

nebulia: a nebula (yosh)
I go to play practice. I participate in the interview that a young filmmaker is doing on our Laramie Project. I go to swim practice. And I come back, check my friends page, and find this pretty new bar up at the top of the page! Isn't it cool?

Swimming was cool. Homecoming is this weekend, so there were only eleven people on the JV not going to Homecoming Festivities. So it was fun.

Maman brought home pizza today. I think she's doing better.

Ummm...my Spiral DVD came in! YAY!
